Their Twitter followers outnumber Facebook fans and they’ve got “gorgeous Flickr photos.”

That’s the word from StudentAdvisor.com on a few of the reasons why the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu is ranked number 40 in its fall 2011 listing of Top 100 Social Media Colleges, in a field that includes Harvard, Yale and Stanford.

“At colleges around the country, social media has the pulse of pop culture while providing a real world ‘temperature’ in real time,” said Dean Tsouvalas, editor-in-chief of StudentAdvisor.com.

“Social media is playing an increasingly important role in the student experience,” said West Oʻahu Chancellor Gene Awakuni.

The Top 100 Social Media Colleges ranking compares more than 6,000 federally recognized colleges and universities and post-secondary schools in the United States in terms of their mastery of public social media methods, tools and websites.

UH West Oʻahu debuted on the list in spring 2011 at number 66, the first and only Hawaiʻi university to be recognized. The list is updated every semester and is in its third edition for fall 2011.
