Jodi Leong was named University of Hawaiʻi System director of communications and Herbert Yu was appointed director of the Cancer Epidemiology Program at the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center.
KITV Island Television news anchor/reporter Jodi Leong will join the University of Hawaiʻi System as its new director of communications. Leong will be responsible for assisting with the university’s communications strategy, news media relations, branding and messaging and marketing efforts and publicizing the university’s strengths and initiatives.
“The University of Hawaiʻi is rapidly adapting to contemporary ways of communicating and Jodi Leong’s long career in broadcast journalism and strong professional connections to members of the news media in Hawaiʻi will be of great value to our reach and effectiveness,” said Associate Vice President of External Affairs and University Relations Lynne Waters.
Leong received her BA in broadcast journalism from UH Mānoa. She began her broadcast career at KITV in 1991 as a producer, on-camera reporter and weekend anchor. In 2000 she moved to KHNL Hawaiʻi News 8 where she was weeknight co-anchor. She returned to KITV in 2006 as a reporter and helped inaugurate the first weekend morning newscast in the state in 2010, which she co-anchored with Paul Drewes.
The University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center named Herbert Yu as director of the Cancer Epidemiology Program. Yu brings nearly 30 years of experience in cancer research to the center and he will enhance the program’s ability to explore gene environment interactions as a factor in the development of cancer.
Yu was recently a professor with the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Yale University School of Public Health and School of Medicine. His research focuses on gene-environment interactions, molecular features of tumor progression and changes in epigenetic regulation in relation to tumor progression and cancer prognosis.
His extensive background in cancer research includes active membership in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, associate editor for Cancer Causes and Control and editorial board member for the Chinese Journal of Clinical Oncology.
