Building at the Molokai Education Center
UH Maui College plans to expand its educational facilities on Molokaʻi.

The University of Hawaiʻi has purchased 3.2 acres of land in Kaunakakai from Molokaʻi Ranch that will help the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College realize its master plan goals of expanding its educational facilities on Molokaʻi.

The parcel of land purchased is located adjacent to the Molokaʻi Education Center.

“This purchase will eventually expand the college’s Molokaʻi Education Center and strengthen our capacity to provide more higher education and economic opportunities,” said UH Maui College Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto. “Critical to this outcome will be community input to realistically leverage public and private resources to create new possibilities for Molokaʻi. Long-range planning will now begin in earnest.”

The Molokaʻi Education Center serves approximately 250 students. Through the center, students can pursue certificate and associate degrees in seven primary majors from UH Maui College, including liberal arts, agriculture and natural resources, business careers, early childhood education, Hawaiian studies, human services and allied health. Plans to include UH Maui College’s three bachelor’s degrees are underway.

A wide variety of bachelor’s and master’s degrees are also available from other UH campuses facilitated by UH Center, Maui, which connects Molokaʻi students to UH Mānoa, UH Hilo, and UH West Oʻahu through interactive television, off-island travel and the Internet.

UH Maui College on Molokaʻi provides great opportunities for our kids on the island and we couldn’t be more pleased to play a role in their expansion through this sale,” said Clay Rumbaoa, CEO of Molokaʻi Ranch. “We look forward to being able to partner with them in the future to bring specialty workshops and other activities to the residents of Molokaʻi.”
