Jan Javinar has joined the University of Hawaiʻi—West Oʻahu as its new vice chancellor for student affairs.

The former director of student life and development at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Javinar has held leadership positions in student affairs administration and management for over 29 years. He spent the last 24 years overseeing student life, student activities and college union administration.

Since admitting its first freshmen class in fall 2007, UH West Oʻahu has more than doubled its student population with enrollment increasing from 980 students in fall 2007 to over 2,000 students in fall 2012 when the new Kapolei campus opened.

“In addition to increasing enrollment, it is also crucial for UH West Oʻahu to increase student retention and success rates,” said UH West Oʻahu Chancellor Gene Awakuni. “For that reason, it’s important that the Office of Student Affairs be led by a strong vice chancellor who will provide clear direction and possess the management expertise required to address these important issues.

“Jan has been instrumental in designing and implementing leadership opportunities and activities that promote students’ co-curricular and out-of-classroom learning experiences, which can be significant as part of one’s college experience,” said Awakuni.

Javinar is a graduate of UH Mānoa, earning a bachelor’s degree in education, and a master’s degree and doctorate in education administration.

“I’m very excited to be joining the UH West Oʻahu faculty and staff to help in creating a campus community that everyone can be proud of,” said Javinar. “I believe strongly that a college education has afforded me so many opportunities, both personally and professionally, and this gives me the chance to share that passion with the next generation of young leaders.”
