Professor David Callies

Professor David L. Callies, the Benjamin A. Kudo Professor of Law at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa William S. Richardson School of Law, received the 2012 Lambda Alpha International (LAI) Member of the Year Award.

LAI is an international honorary society concerned with land economics. Its membership—by invitation only—represents a virtual international “Who’s Who” in the field of land economics and related disciplines. This award recognizes and honors the international reputation Callies enjoys for his expertise in land use law.

“This award is extremely fitting because it demonstrates how widely recognized and very much appreciated David is far beyond what he has done for the Law School and for Hawaiʻi,” said School of Law Dean Avi Soifer.

Callies in one of LAI/Hawaiʻi’s founding members, is past president of the Aloha Chapter and he is also Pacific Rim Vice president. Callies has been instrumental in expanding its reach particularly by working with colleagues in Asia.

Callies has published 20 books and more than 100 articles relating to land use, property and state and local government regulations and issues. He has taught at the law school since the 1970’s and is the holder of its first professorial chair.
