This video was shot by University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo staff while conducting research on the progress of the recent lava flow from Kilauea volcano as it approached and then entered the ocean.

Coordinates of the flow front are obtained using GPS, and then compared with data collected earlier, to determine the speed of the flow.

The lava is spectacular, but in a remote and virtually inaccessible area. It was filmed from a safe distance using a zoom lens that makes the lava appear closer than it actually is.
