The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Lyon Arboretum

The Harold L. Lyon Arboretum in Mānoa Valley offers a variety of classes for spring. Classes will be held through May and all ages are welcome to learn about everything from container gardening to growing vanilla beans at home.

Container Gardening Basics
Description: Create a successful and long-living container garden with Brian and Mhei from the Oʻahu Master Gardener Program.
Date: Saturday, February 23, 9:30–11:30 a.m.
Cost: $15 person

Cooking With Greens: What is this vegetable and how do I use it?
Description: Joan Namkoong, local cookbook editor, writer, localvore and foodie extraordinaire will share some fresh, interesting and delicious greens and creative ways to use them in this demonstration class.
Date: Friday, March 8; 9:30–11:30 a.m.
Cost: $15+$15 supply fee

Orchid Culture
Instructor: Doug DeMoss
Description: Learn how to raise these horticultural splendors from an expert. Doug DeMoss will discuss the culture and care of a variety of orchids.
Date: Saturday March 9; 9:30–11:30 a.m.
Cost: $20 per person

Bees: Growing a Tree Garden
Instructor: TGCH Conservation Committee
Description: Learn about the extreme value of bees in our ecosystem and gain tips on the best ways to enlist the help of bees in your pursuit of a more beautiful and healthy garden.
Date: Friday, April 5; 9:30–11:30 a.m.
Cost: $15 per person

Rain Gardens for Home Landscapes
Description: Jolie Wanger will instruct participants on how to build a rain garden that will help recharge precious island aquifers and keep gardens green. Create a system that helps prevent the loss of storm run-off, and makes gardens more attractive and functional at the same time.
Date: Saturday April 6, 9:30–11:30 a.m.
Cost: $20 per person

Vanilla Culture
Description: Learn how to grow your own vanilla beans. Doug DeMoss will teach participants how to propagate, pollinate and care for the vanilla orchid, grown for its beautiful flower, robust vining foliage and its aromatic fermented fruit.
Date: Saturday March 27, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Cost: $20 per person

Easy Composting and Growing Garden Veggies
Description: Terri Langley, Anna Yorba, Margaret Mortz will give a primer on composting, and how to grow salad vegetables in your own yard, or on your lanai.
Date: Friday, April 19, 9:30–11:30 a.m.
Cost: $15 per person

ʻOhe Ka Pala
Description: Kaʻiulani deSilva will discuss the art and history of ʻohe ka pala Date: Saturday, May 4; 9-11:30 a.m.
Cost: $20 per person
