UH Manoa university librarian named
Irene Herold has been named the new university librarian at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa effective August 1, 2013.
Herold was the former dean of Mason Library at Keene State College in New Hampshire, and is currently an Association of College and Research Libraries Board director-at-large She has served on ACRL/Law and Political Science Section and ACRL/College Library Section committees, as well as two editorial boards (Library Issues and College and Undergraduate Libraries Journal). Herold’s recent national presentations have been on mentoring for leadership development, mindful leadership, leading organizational change and return on investment using a triple bottom line approach (people, planet, profit).
While at Keene State, Herold co-authored campus grant proposals supporting the general education program; led two library renovations; increased giving to the library; cultivated alumni, donors and community groups; and participated on numerous committees. During her tenure as dean at Mason Library, she facilitated a revision of the library’s instruction program and incorporation of information literacy in the general education program. She oversaw implementation of print management, started a green bike lending program, minimized the electricity consumption of public workstations by using thin clients, and increased recycling stations in the library.
“Dr. Herold possesses an exemplary background and experience in academic leadership and in promoting and sustaining innovative programs within higher education. She has an impressive expertise, academic and administrative experience and strong recognition and respect in the national arena,” said UH Mānoa Chancellor Tom Apple. “ We enthusiastically welcome her leadership for our library and our university.”
