UH remembers Robert J. Blanchard
“Bob was an eminent scholar in behavioral neuroscience specifically in the areas of aggression and defensive behavior as well as providing foundational research on Alzheimer’s disease,” said longtime colleague, UH Hilo Professor Gary R. Ten Eyck. “Bob was an outstanding mentor and colleague that served on numerous university, national and international committees and other organizational activities.”
Blanchard is credited with contributing to more than 40 books in his field and writing six of his own including The Handbook of Anxiety and The Biopsychology of Fear and Defense, along with dozens of journal articles.
Blanchard was born in Watertown, MA and received his bachelor’s degree from Boston University, earned his master’s and PhD from the University of Iowa and served in the United States Army before coming to UH in 1964.
