Score for Scholarships, the annual partnership of the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo and KTA Super Stores, kicked off the 2014 campaign. KTA supports student athletes, encouraging peak performances from the teams.

Every year, KTA Super Stores supports the UH Hilo Vulcans Athletic program based on the per-game athletic achievements in basketball (men’s and women’s), soccer (men’s and women’s), women’s softball and volleyball and men’s baseball.

In basketball, KTA donates $50 for every 3-point basket the Vulcans score. Each goal in soccer earns the team a $100 donation and volleyball aces are awarded $50. For both baseball and softball, the Vulcans receive $25 for pitcher recorded strikeouts, $50 for doubles, $75 for triples, $100 for homeruns and $500 for grand slams.

All donations go into the KTA Score for Scholarships Endowment Fund, which goes toward offsetting costs for tuition, room, board, books and other academic support services for student athletes. In 2013, $11,700 was raised.

“This is our 11th year of supporting UH Hilo students, and it is always rewarding to be involved with the community in this way, by helping to ensure that the athletes at UH Hilo receive the very best education,” said Pearl Daimaru-Orozco, marketing manager at KTA Super Stores.

“We look forward to continuing this special partnership with KTA Super Stores,” said Tim Moore, interim UH Hilo athletic director. “A big mahalo to the community for their ongoing support and to KTA Super Stores for their generosity!”

Through 2013, KTA Super Stores raised more than $170,000 for UH Hilo Athletics. In Score for Scholarships, the athletic program can receive up to $28,000 per year. Participating vendors this year include Conagra Foods, Gatorade, General Mills, Hawaiian Sun, Hershey’s, Kraft, Pepsi, Procter and Gamble, Quaker, Love’s, Diamond Bakery, Kellogg’s, Kettle Brand/Lundberg, Banana Boat and Georgia-Pacific.

In 2014, UH Hilo men’s and women’s basketball runs until March 1, women’s softball through April 28, and men’s baseball through May 4. Dates for men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball are still to be determined.
