The College Media Association named Honolulu Community College’s student newspaper Ka Lā the Best Newspaper for a two-year school with less than 7,500 student enrollment. This was part of the 2014 Apple Awards, which were handed out at the group’s national convention in New York City in March.

“It’s a pretty remarkable accomplishment. We have a very small, but hard-working, staff. I’m proud of what they’ve been able to achieve,” says Mike Leidemann, journalism instructor and Student Media Board advisor. “Much credit goes to our student editor, Mathew Ursua. He’s a true believer in the importance and power of journalism.”

The David L. Adams Apple Awards are given as a Best of Show at the annual College Media Association spring conference in New York City. The awards are named in honor of David L. Adams, a longtime college media advisor and advisor at Indiana University, who died in 2007.

“Journalism classes, school newspapers and websites are thriving at hundreds of colleges across the country and, despite the changes in the industry, thousands of college students still study journalism and are hoping to find jobs in newspapers and all the related industries because they see it as an exciting and vital field,” shares Leidemann.

The College Media Association serves student media pros, staffs and programs with education, research and resources. The association communicates and works with professional media organizations and education associations on the local, state and national levels.

Ka Lā is run entirely by students and operated under the supervision of the college’s Student Media Board.
