Jan Gouveia named VP for administration
The University of Hawaiʻi System is pleased to announce the selection of Jan S. Gouveia as vice president for administration, subject to the approval of the Board of Regents at its first regular meeting of the 2014–2015 academic year on July 17, 2014. As vice president for administration, Gouveia will be responsible for overseeing and managing systemwide operational programs in procurement, real property and risk management, capital improvements, human resources, and internal and external communications.
Gouveia will assume an existing vacant vice presidential position. The Board of Regents’ Advisory Task Group, which examined university organization, policies, procedures and lines of reporting authority, recommended that the office of the vice president for administration be re-established as one step in improving university operations. The Board of Regents approved a reorganization to do so earlier this year, after which an open recruitment was initiated.
Gouveia brings more than 15 years of administrative and leadership experience in the public and private sectors, including 4 years with the University of Hawaiʻi. She currently serves as Hawaiian Airlines’ managing director for training and development and manager of strategy and transformation with the strategic goal of increasing efficiency and effectiveness. She has previously held cabinet level positions in state government, served as chief legal counsel for the Honolulu Board of Water Supply and was the inaugural director of risk management at UH.
UH President David Lassner noted that, “The reorganization approved by the regents recognizes the importance of a strong VP for administration to focus on key strategic and operational improvements. By taking a careful look at our structure we were able to address this priority without adding new administrative positions. I am absolutely delighted that Jan Gouveia has agreed to rejoin UH and take on this critical role.”
If her appointment is approved, she will begin in her new role August 15, 2014 with an annual salary of $225,000.
