open-access

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will be celebrating Open Access Week, October 20–27. Learn about Open Access (OA) and explore changes in scholarly publishing and how they can affect the academic journey from student to early career researcher and beyond.

Throughout the week, the UH Mānoa community is invited to learn about open educational resources at the Outreach College, to navigate the impact of copyright on teaching and research, and how to contribute to Wikipedia. Go the event website for the full schedule of events.

Open Access Week is an international event providing the global academic and research community the opportunity to learn about and share experiences with OA, with the aim of helping to make OA a new norm in scholarship and research. Open Access to information—the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and reuse those results as needed—has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. This year is the eighth year for Open Access Week and the fifth year of participation for UH Mānoa.

Rights to research and publishing practices with Nick Shockey

Open Access Week will feature guest speaker, Nick Shockey, who is director of programs and engagement at SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition). He is also director of the right to research coalition, which represents local, national and international student organizations that advocate for researchers, universities and governments to adopt more open scholarly publishing practices. The coalition currently represents around 7 million students in approximately 100 countries around the world, including students at UH Mānoa.

All are welcome to attend Shockey’s presentation on Monday, October 27, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in ITS 105AB.
