Kapiʻolani Community College’s Respiratory Care Practitioner Program is among a select group of nationwide programs that will receive the Distinguished Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credentialing Success Award by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care. The RRT credential is a standard for professional achievement that measures a program’s success in inspiring its graduates to attain their highest educational aspirations.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Kapiʻolani CC’s Respiratory Care Practitioner Program has received this award, which places Kapiʻolani’s program in the top 10 percent of approximately 450 accredited programs nationwide.

Kathy J. Rye, president of the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care, stated that in selecting programs for this recognition, the commission board used objective criteria based on key accreditation metrics documented in the 2014 Annual Report of Current Status. These programs met rigorous requirements, including:

  • Having three or more years of outcomes data
  • Holding accreditation without a progress report
  • Documenting RRT credentialing success of 90 percent or above
  • Meeting or exceeding established Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care thresholds for credentialing success, attrition and positive (job) placement

Robert Vega, program director for respiratory care, and Jung Eun Kim, lead instructor, will travel to Phoenix, Arizona in July to receive a certificate of recognition for the program’s outstanding commitment to excellence in respiratory care education.
