Students interested in a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering are invited to apply to the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program.

Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

In the spring of 2016, the foundation will award scholarships to students who will be college juniors or seniors during the 2016–2017 academic year. To be considered for an award, students must be nominated by their institution.

The submission deadline for all 2016 applications is January 22, 2016 by 5 p.m. central time. Applications have to be submitted electronically from the foundation’s website at http://goldwaterscholars.scholarsapply.org. No paper applications will be accepted.

The scholarship award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Junior scholarship recipients can expect to receive a maximum of two years of support. Senior scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of support.

To be eligible, student must:

  • be a current full-time sophomore or junior
  • have one or two years of full-time undergraduate study left while pursuing a baccalaureate degree
  • have a B average or equivalent
  • stand in the upper fourth of the class
  • be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or U.S. national
  • pursue a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering
