Norman Takeya

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) student chapters program awarded Honolulu Community College Assistant Professor Norman Takeya the outstanding educator award in a ceremony held at the 2016 NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas in January.

Sponsored by Delmar Cengage Learning, this prestigious award recognizes and encourages high quality standards in teaching construction education. Educators are recognized for their voluntary extracurricular activities, including those with construction industry organizations, as well as their construction experience and professional initiatives.

More than 100,000 builders, remodelers, students, faculty members and suppliers packed the aisles at the 2016 International Builders’ Show, Design and Construction Week.

“Congratulations to Professor Takeya” said Jerry Howard, CEO of NAHB. “Norman demonstrates a dedication to the field of teaching and helping students achieve their very best at Honolulu Community College.”

Students honored

In addition, two student teams from Honolulu Community College’s construction management and architectural, engineering and CAD technology programs participated in the 2016 Residential Construction Management Competition sponsored by the NAHB student chapters.

A total of 53 teams for 2-year and 4-year colleges competed. In the 2-year college category, the Honolulu CC student teams came in 5th and 7th. Construction management student Emily Borium won the outstanding student award.

The competition gives students the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to a real construction company by completing a management project/proposal. Proposals are submitted to a group of construction company executives who act as judges. During the convention, students defend their proposals to the judges in front of an audience. This competition is held in conjunction with the International Builders Show.

Industry professionals with BIA Hawaiʻi, Castle and Cooke and Gentry Homes mentored the teams on a weekly basis to help them through the process.
