The Office of the Vice President for Community Colleges has selected 42 recipients for the 2016 Isamu Shinshiro Scholarship for Sustainable Technology Education and Technology. The scholarship recipients are all pursuing degrees or certificates in programs that have been identified as supporting renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, pollution reduction and removal, greenhouse gas reduction, recycling and reuse and natural resources conservation, as well as environmental compliance, education and training and public awareness.

The late Isamu Shinshiro was a retired sewage treatment plan operator whose desire was to help lower or eliminate financial barriers that prevent community college students from accessing a good education and training in industries that sustain Hawaiʻi’s natural environment, ecosystems and resource. His $1.6 million gift supports annual scholarship distributions to eligible UH community college students. Since its inception 2012, the Shinshiro Scholarship has benefited 95 students and distributed more than $78,000.

“We are deeply thankful for people like Isamu Shinshiro, who had the foresight and generosity to be part of the solution for a better Hawaiʻi,” said John Morton, vice president for community colleges. “These students will benefit from Mr. Shinshiro’s legacy with skills that support a sustainable Hawaiʻi, and ultimately, we all will benefit from having a skilled workforce focused on sustainability.”
