The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Program at Kapiʻolani Community College has received the annual merit award for achieving a 100 percent graduate pass rate on the certified surgical technologist examination cycle. The cycle ran from August 1, 2015 through July 31, 2016. Kapiʻolani CC’s CST Program is the only non-credit accredited program of its kind in the state.

The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting has a 40-year history in CST examination development. The examination is a fully accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies for surgical technologists. NBSTSA stated in a news brief that “certification as a surgical technologist exhibits professional pride, the desire to be recognized for mastery of surgical competencies, and most importantly an ongoing commitment to quality patient care.”

Patricia O’Hagan, dean of emergency medical services, health sciences and nursing at Kapiʻolani CC attributes the success of the program to Tony Choy of the nursing department “who has worked very hard to deliver a stellar program where the graduates become an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients.”
