A newly-formed community arts group, Artists for Social Justice, presents Arts in Conversation: Immigration, an evening of performances centered on the theme of immigration, March 14, 7:30 p.m. at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Orvis Auditorium. Artists have been on the move from the beginning of time. Just like all other migrants, the have traveled to learn, to teach, to share, to escape and to build better lives, and their travel has shaped both their art and the culture at large. This inter-disciplinary concert will explore these topics in the context of our modern immigration debate.
Favorite composers such as Rachamaninoff, Dvorak and John Williams will be featured, as well as modern composers such as Reza Vali. These musical performances will also be accompanied by spoken word, dance and video presentations, as well as topical speakers.
Some of Hawaiʻi’s favorite artists such as Maya Hoover, Iggy Jang, Jonathan Korth, Rachel Schutz and Tommy Yee will be featured, in addition to performance artists Emma Robinson and Toni Pasion and Professor Mari Yoshihara.
It will be a though-provoking and moving evening and serves to highlight the important role that the arts play in mediating social issues.
