The founder of the Shidler College of Business Entrepreneurs Club Joey Aquino, a 2010 graduate who now works as a startup business development manager at Amazon in Seattle, is helping to raise funds for a local education nonprofit founded by two other University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa alumni.
Aquino is part of Kamayan for Da Keiki, a pop-up dinner series that builds momentum for charitable causes. Kamayan is a Filipino style of eating where a menu is laid out across a table of banana leaves and guests eat with their kamay (hand).
The next fundraiser is scheduled for Thursday, March 23 in the garden patio of the Tchin Tchin Bar featuring Jesse Cruz, the chef/owner of Lucky Belly, Livestock Tavern and Tchin Tchin Bar.Cruz has designed a 13 item menu for the event, which includes achiote rice, adobo braised ribs, char siu lamb bacon and longanisa.
Tickets are $75 and will benefit the Purple Maiʻa Foundation, a technology education nonprofit currently teaching beginning coding and computer science in nine locations where many students are Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. The foundation increases access to tech education and also grounds students in the knowledge that their ancestors were indigenous innovators who used their skills to serve their communities and lands.
