University of Hawaiʻi Maui College Culinary Arts Program is proud to announce the details for their 2017 Noble Chef fundraising gala on October 28th, 2017. Held at the Fairmont Kea Lani, the event will feature students working alongside Maui’s most notable chefs in a not-to-be-missed culinary journey to the Hawaiʻi of yester-year. Reception begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by sit-down dinner at 7 p.m.

This year’s theme “Hawaiian Renaissance” delights the senses with décor, fashion and traditional local entertainment. Utilizing local produce, ingredients and techniques paired with the islands rich culture, the student chefs will work alongside their professional mentors to create an experience that will transport you back to days gone by of old Hawaiʻi.

Maui’s top celebrity chefs will present appetizers at the cocktail reception created and prepared by a chef student team. Prior to the event, UH Maui College Culinary Arts students work side-by-side with the chefs in their restaurants for hands-on training. Being involved in the process—from developing a menu item through the delivery of locally sourced, world-class cuisine—prepares students as they “learn by doing” for their transformation into the next generation of professional chefs.

This year’s celebrity chefs include:

  • Lee Anderson—Sugar Beach Events
  • Isaac Bancaco—Kaʻana Kitchen at Andaz Maui
  • Robert Barrera—Cane and Canoe at Montage Kapalua
  • Lyndon Honda—Sheraton Maui Resort
  • Travis Morrin—Three’s Bar and Grill
  • Geno Sarmiento—Nick’s Fish Market
  • Alvin Savella and Kenneth Sniffen—The Banyan Tree Restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua
  • Roger Stettler—Taverna
  • Ryan Urig—The Grand Wailea Resort

The reception will be followed by a sit-down, coursed dinner prepared and served by the UH Maui College Culinary Arts Program faculty, Chef Tom Lelli and Chef Craig Omori, and students. The evening wraps up with a surprise dessert finale by Four Seasons Resort Maui Executive Pastry Chef Bruce Trouyet and a special pastry art presentation by UH Maui College Culinary Arts Program Coordinator and Pastry Chef Instructor Teresa Shurilla and her students.

After sampling the appetizers, guests can cast their vote for their favorite appetizer, and the winning celebrity chef team will be recognized on stage.

Handcrafted cocktails featuring local island producers Maui Winery, Hawaiʻi Sea Spirits and Haliʻimaile Distillery will be created by master mixologists, and a selection of fine wines will be available during the reception and paired with the dinner courses.

The Noble Chef is UH Maui College Culinary Arts Program’s largest annual fundraiser, with proceeds directly supporting culinary education, student career advancement, and community service. Proceeds are allocated toward student scholarships, student field experiences and internships, student culinary competitions, program enrichment and enhancement and professional development for culinary faculty.
