Mavis Staples

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Performing Arts Center kicks-off its 2014–15 season with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Mavis Staples on Saturday, September 27 at 7:30 p.m.

“There are few living musicians who can lay claim to being the voice of America’s conscience, and even fewer who continue to make vital music,” notes Performing Arts Center Manager Lee Dombroski. “For more than six decades, Staples has been the solid rock of American music. Alongside the family group she is so identified with, the Staple Singers, she has managed to transform herself as she goes, yet never alter.”

Staples is known for crossing genres over the years, from the delta-inflected gospel sound in the 1950s (“Uncloudy Day”), to the engaged protest of the 1960s (“Freedom Highway”), to pop radio in the 1970s with a series of chart hits (“I’ll Take You There,” “Respect Yourself,” “Let’s Do It Again”) to various jazz and blues collaborations and back to her gospel roots.

Staples is also a National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient and VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll. Rolling Stone listed her as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All time.
