On March 25, more than 2,000 students from the Manaiakalani School Cluster welcomed the Polynesian Voyaging Society crew, Hawaiʻi educators and Hawaiian voyaging canoes Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia at Point England in Auckland.

The educational leaders were in New Zealand for an education summit. Their delegation included University of Hawaiʻi President David Lassner, Hawaiʻi Department of Education Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi and leaders from Kamehameha Schools, Punahou School, Hawaiʻi charter schools and the UH Mānoa College of Education.

The students wrote and performed three oli (chants), together with their community elders, on the beach to welcome Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia. The group also received a tour of the schools’ technology program and pioneering efforts to blend indigenous wisdom and STEM education.
