The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Department of Theatre and Dance open its 53rd season with a reimagining of Sophocles’ classic, Antigone, adapted by Greg Banks and directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Mark Branner on the Kennedy Theatre Lawn. Performances will take place Friday, September 16 and 23 at 5 p.m., Saturday, September 17 and 24 and Sunday, September 25 at 2 and 5 p.m.
Banks’ 50 minute one-act adaptation takes the classic Greek play and turns it into an explosive fast-paced thrill ride suitable for audience members from middle school to adult. Highlighting topics that are as relevant today as they were in ancient Greece, this more modern Antigone includes “the conflicts of family versus state, moral conviction versus national law and individual responsibility versus communal harmony.”
Branner has high hopes for this landmark production in terms of collaboration, interaction and its potential impact on the Oʻahu community. “It has always been a poignant story, perhaps even more so given the political landscape with this election year, he says. “This is definitely a show that will resonate with audiences today.”
