Foremost Indonesian authority on Islam will speak at UH Manoa

The UH Manoa Center for Southeast Asian Studies is pleased to present a public lecture on Islam by Dr. Azyumardi Azra, Rector of Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta State Islamic University.

Rector Azra is known internationally as the most influential scholar and leading public figure on moderate Islam in Indonesia, where more followers of Islam live than in any other country in the world.

He will speak on the topic, "Indonesian Islam and Post-Election Politics," on Thursday, February 24, 2005, at the UH Manoa Orvis Auditorium beginning at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Azra is a Fulbright Scholar who received his master‘s and doctoral degrees from Columbia University. He is the author of several books, including The Origins of Islamic Reformism in Southeast Asia, published by the University of Hawaiʻi Press. He also writes regularly for Indonesian newspapers and journals and is a noted commentator on Indonesian Islam and politics for the international media.
