Andrew Hashimoto, dean of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, state legislators and members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha, have agreed to discussions on how best to recognize Hawaiian cultural concerns as UH researchers try to develop disease-resistant strains of taro. On May 24, the dean signed a statement of the university's intent to participate in appropriate dialog before initiating new research using Hawaiian taro varieties. The complete statement is available as a pdf file on the CTAHR website at http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/ctahr2001/0524TaroStatement.pdf
