Alexander McCall Smith schedules two public lectures

Internationally acclaimed popular author Alexander McCall Smith is the next presenter in the UH Manoa Distinguished Lecture Series. McCall Smith has written more than 50 books, but is best known for his "The No. 1 Ladies‘ Detective Agency" series of books that have become worldwide best sellers with more than 40 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.

The series has received several prizes and has recently been optioned for a feature film. His recent book, "The Sunday Philosophy Club," became an instant best seller when it was published in 2004.

McCall Smith is a native of what is now known as Zimbabwe. He was educated there and in Scotland, where he is now a professor of medical law at the University of Edinburgh.

Science and scientists will be in the spotlight at next year‘s Distinguished Lecture Series. The lineup of presenters for the academic year 2006-2007 has now been finalized. They are:

CRAIG VENTER (J. Craig Venter Institute), entrepreneur, geneticist who pioneered an alternative method for sequencing the human genome, currently researching the "ocean genome"

RICHARD DAWKINS (Oxford), evolutionary biologist, author of "The Selfish Gene" and other books.

RICHARD ALLEY (Pennsylvania State University), paleoclimatologist, expert in climate change, author of "The Two-Mile Time Machine."
