The search advisory committee for the dean‘s position at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) held its first meeting this week.

Dew-Anne Langcaon, COO at PacifiCap Management — Hawaiʻi‘s largest locally-based venture capital firm that invests in high technology companies — co-chairs the committee with UH Manoa Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education Gary Ostrander.

In her charge to committee members, Manoa Chancellor Denise Konan encouraged them to look for candidates who can best articulate a vision and possess the skills and leadership qualities to move the medical school forward.

"Our committee includes university personnel as well as appropriate members of the community," said co-chair Ostrander. "I expect wide interest in the dean‘s position given the new state-of-the-art campus facilities and our highly-regarded education and research programs at the school. We look forward to beginning our review of applicants."

Co-chair Langcaon noted, "The dean of the medical school holds a critically important leadership role in the development and growth of a biosciences industry in the State of Hawaiʻi. We in the industry appreciate the opportunity to participate in the search process," she added. "JABSOM‘s next dean will need to forge very complex collaborative relationships throughout the community, and I‘m pleased that the university has assembled a committee that is representative of the many stakeholders."

The committee plans to retain the services of a search consultant firm, and has already received proposals for services from a number of high-profile companies that specialize in this area.

Besides co-chairs Ostrander and Langcaon, committee members are:
