HONOLULU — University of Hawaiʻi President David McClain announces the President‘s Emerging Leaders Program, a professional development initiative for UH faculty and staff. The program will give participating employees a unique opportunity to gain a base of knowledge about higher education and a chance to develop leadership skills and strategies to make a difference on campus and within the system.

The pilot program is a year-long commitment that begins on Sept. 6, 2007 and culminates on May 1, 2008 with an initial group of 20. All faculty and staff are welcome to apply.

"We are seeking individuals who exhibit the attitude and capacity necessary for effective leadership within our academic community," said President David McClain. "I hope many will take advantage of this opportunity to contribute their talents to the future of the University of Hawaiʻi."

Sessions will take place once a week via Polycom or HITS during the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 semesters in addition to all-day sessions at the opening and at the end of the academic year. A variety of learning methods, such as interactive discussions and hands-on activities, will be used to develop leadership skills and apply those skills in solving real-life issues.

Interested applicants should submit their application form by June 25. Participants will be selected by an advisory committee drawn from faculty and staff throughout the system. Organizers anticipate offering the program again in the future.
