Albert C. Kobayashi, Inc. has been chosen as the design-assist partner and general contractor to build the first phase of the UH West Oʻahu campus in the City of Kapolei. Groundbreaking will take place within the first quarter of 2009 and inaugural classes are slated for fall 2010.

As the design-assist partner, Albert C. Kobayashi, Inc. will work closely with UHWO administration and consultants to expedite and manage the value-conscious, sustainable project. The company will collaborate in cost estimating, value engineering, constructability and other related pre-construction issues that will yield greater value for the project.

Locally-owned Albert C. Kobayashi, Inc. has operated in Hawaiʻi for over 40 years and brings a wealth of experience in the design-assist process as well as, constructing educational, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified facilities. A few notable projects that were completed on time and on budget by the company include Kapolei High School, Kapolei Middle School, Punahou Case Middle School and the Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus.

Phase one of the UHWO campus will accommodate more than 1,500 students with six buildings — Administration, Campus Center, Library, Classrooms 1A and 1B, and Maintenance. The architectural design of the new campus will incorporate the latest trends in environmental sustainability — striving to achieve a LEED certification by following strict standards established by the U.S. Green Building Council.

UH West Oʻahu is currently seeking a zone change request (Bill 25) and a plan review use permit from the Honolulu City Council, which will complete the entitlement process.

UH West Oʻahu became a four-year, comprehensive university when it served its first class of freshmen in fall 2007. The university offers quality education, small classes and personalized attention at convenient locations.
