Volunteers Sought for Jan. 19 Planting Day on Campus
University of Hawaiʻi at MānoaVolunteers are needed to lay mulch, and to plant shade trees, ground cover, shrubbery and native vegetation in the area leading from McCully-Moiliili to the makai campus leading to the Stan Sheriff Center. Participants should bring garden gloves and small hand tools, and wear protective head cover and sunscreen. Water will be provided.
The activity, co-sponsored by the UHM Landscape Advisory Council and Office of the Chancellor, is aided by a grant from the USDA Forest Service‘s Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program. Federal legislation challenges Americans to spend the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on community-empowering volunteer service.
"While we have previously held Volunteer Planting Days on the Mānoa campus, this is our way of venturing out into the surrounding community to establish connections and be good neighbors," said Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw. "By planting attractive landscaping on a tree-lined passageway running from King Street to the Dole Street dormitory complex, we hope to transform the Varsity Gate area into a more attractive neighborhood."
In addition to the citizen-driven landscaping efforts, the area will be improved with walkways and bicycles lanes. The effort is part of Chancellor Hinshaw‘s Mānoa Makeover initiative that encourages and facilitates volunteer projects aimed at beautifying the campus.
Interested volunteers are being asked to report on January 19 from 8 to 8:30 a.m. to the guard shack near the Kahanamoku Pool. To register, send an email to UHM Landscaping Manager Roxanne Adams at adamsrox@hawaii.edu. Volunteers may park near the ROTC building on Lower Campus Road at no charge.
