The University of Hawai’i at Mānoa’s Department of Theatre and Dance kicks off its 2009-2010 mainstage season with the world premiere of the new youth theatre production “When the Cassowary Pooped,” directed by the critically acclaimed Tamara Montgomery. “When the Cassowary Pooped,” playing Oct. 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 4 at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., is based on the book of the same title to be released in Sept. 2009, written by Montgomery and Jodi Parry Belknap with illustrations by Joseph D. Dodd.

“This production is not only fun, but is also a wonderful way to introduce children to the endangered species of New Guinea,” said Montgomery. “Our talented and dynamic cast truly brings this story to life,” she added. Montgomery continues her legacy of UHM children’s productions that offer educational and entertainment value by directing the third play about endangered species of the Pacific Rim.

“When the Cassowary Pooped” is a humorous and intriguing story about a very large endangered bird whose feeding habits create a tropical rainforest habitat for an assortment of birds, mammals and insects in New Guinea. The production is filled with magical effects, colorful costumes and even more colorful characters including a large Cassowary bird puppet, do-wopping frogs, fanciful birds of paradise, a hip-hopping kangaroo, a fruit bat, a pinching coconut crab and a pidgin speaking storyreader (played by local celebrity, Tony Young). Full of humor and action, this environmental tale is geared for families with young children ages four to eight.

Audience members will be able to purchase copies of the newly released book “When the Cassowary Pooped” and have them autographed by the authors and illustrator at each performance.
