Fall 2009 Faculty Lecture Series, sponsored by the UH Mānoa Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education, Office of Research Relations, and the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa Library, presents a lecture by Craig Howes, Director, Center for Biographical Research, on Thursday, November 5, 2009 in Hamilton Library Room 301 from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Drawing examples from his experiences as a television documentary and radio producer, as a journal and book editor, as a performer and dramaturge, and as a member of university Personnel, and Tenure and Promotion Review Committees, Craig Howes will discuss how such academic work differs from the paradigms embedded in traditional notions of university research; how production scholarship poses challenges for those engaged in it, and for those assigned to evaluate its importance or relevance; and how such productions can affirm the value of scholarship outside of the academic community while at the same time being professionally valuable in themselves.

Craig Howes has been the Director of the Center for Biographical Research (CBR) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa since 1997, and Editor and Co-Editor of the journal Biography: An Interdisciplinary Quarterly since 1994, the same year he became a Professor in the Department of English where he has taught since 1980. His book Voices of the Vietnam POWs (Oxford UP, 1993) was selected as a notable academic book by Choice magazine. As CBR Director, he is also General Editor of the Biography Monograph Series, co-published with the University of Hawai‘i Press, and the series scholar and co-producer for the Biography Hawai‘i television documentary series.

He teaches courses in editing, lifewriting, composition, literary theory, and drama, receiving the University of Hawai‘i Board of Regents Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1998. A past President of the Hawai‘i Literary Arts Council, he has served on the boards of Kumu Kahua Theatre and Monkey Waterfall Dance Theatre Company, and has numerous stage and television credits as an actor. He currently serves as co-producer for the Bamboo Ridge / Hawai‘i Public Radio show, Aloha Shorts. In 2005, he received the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
