Hawai‘i P-20 Partnerships for Education is proud to partner with the Hawai‘i Department of Education, University of Hawai‘i, and a number of community partners to celebrate January as “College Awareness Month.” January is an important planning month for students heading to college, as applications for college admissions, scholarships, and financial aid are due. It is also a good time to promote early awareness about the importance and accessibility of going to college.

Throughout the month Hawai‘i P-20 will coordinate a multi-media campaign which includes television, radio, and print ads focused on college and career readiness. This campaign is made possible by its generous sponsors: University of Hawai‘i Federal Credit Union and The Learning Coalition.

Hawai‘i P-20 will also sponsor various events focused on preparing students for higher education.

On January 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Hawai‘i P-20 and Pearlridge Center will present “GEAR UP for College” at Pearlridge Center Uptown. Students and parents are invited to meet with college admission experts from the University of Hawai‘i campuses, Hawai‘i Pacific University, Chaminade and Brigham Young University. There will also be information on financial aid and how to apply for scholarships. Fair attendees will also have a chance to win a roundtrip neighbor island ticket, courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines.

For a complete listing of free college prep resources and events happening statewide, the public is encouraged to visit the GEAR UP Hawai‘i website at gearup.hawaii.edu or call toll-free from all islands: 1-866-808-4327.

Hawai‘i P-20 Partnerships for Education is a statewide partnership led by the Good Beginnings Alliance, the Hawai‘i State Department of Education and the University of Hawai‘i System that is working to strengthen the education pipeline from early childhood through higher education so that all students achieve career and college success. Hawai‘i P-20 partners share a sense of urgency about the need to improve Hawaii’s educational outcomes in an increasingly global economy. Visit www.p20hawaii.org for more information.

GEAR UP Hawai‘i, a program under Hawai‘i P-20, is a federally-funded program that aims to encourage all youth to study hard, stay in school and prepare for success via higher education. For more information, visit GEAR UP Hawai‘i at gearup.hawaii.edu or call (808) 956-3879.
