The University of Hawaiʻi College of Education is offering teachers the opportunity to enroll in two programs — the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Secondary Education (PBCSE) and the Masters in Special Education (MEd SPED) — and has scheduled informational meetings on all islands for interested applicants.

Both programs have been offered in the past on one neighbor island at a time. But now for the first time they will be offered simultaneously statewide, thanks to distance education programs through the Internet and condensed weekend instruction at sites to be determined over several weekends.

The certificate program will be offered in math, science, English and social studies. It is designed to accommodate both new teaching candidates and people who are already employed as teachers but who are unlicensed. Classes are taught online and/or during non-working hours.

The master‘s in special education program is a nationally accredited teacher education program; every student will be assigned an academic advisor within the department of special education.

Student travel is required approximately three weekends per semester. Air travel and accommodations will be provided to students traveling inter-island. Access to a computer and the Internet are required. Priority admission will be granted to applicants without access to other licensure programs.

Contact the Office of Student Advising Services at (808) 956-7849 for application materials for the PBCSE and the Department of Special Education at (808) 956-7956 for M.Ed. admission information. Prospective students are encouraged to apply immediately.
