HONOLULU—The University of Hawai‘i Alumni Association Board of Directors is pleased to welcome Douglas H. Inouye, Esq., BA ’85, MBA ’03 as its 2010-12 president, effective July 1.

“The responsibility to lead this organization is both an honor and very humbling at the same time,” said Inouye. “While I am president, I hope to expand and maximize our ability to reach out to the less engaged alumni and get them to reconnect with us and their alma mater.”

Inouye joined UHAA’s Board of Directors in 2003 and has been its vice president for the past two years. He is a proud University of Hawai‘i alumnus and underscores the importance of UH alumni contributions to Hawai‘i.

“UH alumni are the very fiber of our community,” he said. “Our alumni are well represented in every industry, profession and business in this state. They embody 100 years of stewardship and preservation of the commercial, intellectual, athletic and spiritual growth of Hawai‘i.”

Inouye currently serves as corporate counsel at the Queen’s Health Systems and has been an attorney in Hawai‘i for more than 18 years. He previously served as deputy attorney general for the State of Hawai‘i in the Employment Law Division, and he practiced in the private sector at the law firms of Dwyer Imanaka Schraff Kudo Meyer & Fujimoto and Libkuman Ventura Ayabe Chong & Nishimoto.

Before becoming an attorney, Inouye was in hotel management with Outrigger Hotels Hawaii. During that time he also studied journalism at UH Mānoa and worked part-time at the campus paper, Ka Leo O Hawai‘i, as a reporter and photographer. In the midst of his undergraduate studies, he had a unique opportunity through his church to study and live in Japan for three years. He earned an associate’s in Japanese from Tenri University in Nara, Japan, in 1982, then came back to Hawai‘i and finished his BA in journalism at UH in 1985. He went on to earn his law degree from Boston College in 1991, and he came back to UH Mānoa for an executive MBA from the Shidler College of Business, which he earned in 2003.

A local boy and second youngest of eight children, Inouye delivered newspapers and worked weekends at a produce store in Chinatown in order to help his parents make ends meet. Inouye’s wife, Jane, grew up in Seattle, and their son Gordon is currently a junior at Maryknoll High School.

In addition to volunteering with UHAA, Inouye also serves the community as vice president on the board of directors for Special Education Centers of Hawai‘i, member of the State Board of Private Detectives and Security Guards and member of the Tenrikyo Young Men’s Association.

“It is rare to find an alumnus with such a commitment to his alma mater coupled with a strong desire to give back,” said Janet Bullard BA, UHAA executive director. “Those two qualities make Doug the perfect choice for leading UHAA into the next phase of our growth.”

Inouye will lead the alumni association as it embarks on a new membership structure this fall in hopes of growing the organization in support of UH. “Individually, we are graduates and supporters of the university, collectively we are the UHAA, and we are united in the common goal of perpetuating that growth,” said Inouye.

About the University of Hawai‘i Alumni Association
The UHAA was informally constituted in 1922, ten years after the first graduating class of 1912, and formalized into a system-wide umbrella organization for all UH-recognized alumni groups in 1988. Its members support the university, and UHAA sponsors events that showcase the university’s excellence. Governed by a board of directors, UHAA includes a nationwide and international network of 39 affiliated alumni groups. The association’s goal is to generate support for the university by encouraging interaction among UH graduates and friends. The UH Foundation established the Office of Alumni Relations with the approval of the Board of Regents in December 2002. The Office of Alumni Relations works closely with the UHAA to serve the community of UH alumni and students in Hawai‘i and worldwide.
