Middle School Science Fair at Kapiʻolani Community College

The Farrington-Kaiser-Kalani Complex Middle School Science Fair will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 from 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at Kapiʻolani Community College. Through a joint effort by the Department of Education's Farrington-Kaiser-Kalani Complex Area and the Kapiʻolani Community College STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program, 75 projects developed by 6th-8th grade students will be adjudicated by scientists of the Hawaiian Academy of Science and science educators. 

An opening ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. with a welcome by Kapiʻolani Community College Chancellor Leon Richards. Featured speakers will be UH Wahine Head Volleybail Coach Dave Shoji and Dr. Neal Atebara, president, Hawaii Academy of Science. Atebara won the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair while a student at Waiakea High School and took home honors from the International Science and Engineering Fair. 
 
During the adjudication, there will be 14 breakout sessions open to the public, as well as science displays from elementary school students and STEM displays. Student projects may be viewed by the public at 11 a.m. There will be a science show, "Dr. G. Wiz Show", at 12:15 p.m featuring by Dr. Garon Smith, professor of chemistry, University of Montana. The awards ceremony will follow at 1:30 p.m.
 
Elementary school students from the Farrington-Kaiser-Kalani Complex Area will be attending the sessions. There will be 5th grade science displays from the following schools: Fern EIementary, Kalihi-uka EIementary, Kamiloiki EIementary and Koko Head EIementary.
