On Monday, March 5, UH West O‘ahu welcomes Distinguished Visiting Scholar Dr. Gary Okihiro who returns home to Hawai‘i to discuss “Hora, Hora, Hora, Pearl Harbor and Other Acts of Infamy,” during a presentation at the UH West O‘ahu Kuhialoko lanai (E-building) at 5 p.m.
 
A local boy born in Aiea, Okihiro has served as professor and senior scholar at leading national and international institutions including Princeton University, Nihon University in Japan, Cornell University as director of Asian American Studies, and Columbia University as founding director for both the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race and the Asian American Studies Program, as well as the acting director for Latina/o Studies.
 
“Dr. Okihiro is a true pioneer in the field of Asian American History and we are honored to have him as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at UH West O‘ahu,” said UH West O‘ahu Chancellor Gene Awakuni. “He brings tremendous insight on the subject of World War II and the internment camps, and a wealth of understanding to UH West O‘ahu’s multidisciplinary research project investigating the Honouliuli Internment and Prisoner of War Camp in West O‘ahu.”
 
Okihiro is a graduate of Hawai‘i Mission Academy and later went on to receive his PhD in History from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has published 11 highly acclaimed books on Asian and Hawai‘i history; is the editor or co-editor for seven others; and has two additional book manuscripts currently in progress. He authored numerous articles, book chapters, reviews, and review essays, and gives frequent conference presentations and guest lectures. Okihiro is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, book awards, appointments and endowed lectureships, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa in 2010.
 
As a UH West O‘ahu Distinguished Visiting Scholar, Okihiro will be speaking with a variety of community groups and organizations while in Hawai‘i. All events are free and open to the public.

  • March 3 – Presentation, “Pineapple Culture,” Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
  • March 5 – Presentation, “Hora, Hora, Hora, Pearl Harbor and Other Acts of Infamy,” UH West O‘ahu campus, Kuhialoko lanai (E-building), 5 p.m.
  • March 7 – Presentation, “Hora, Hora, Hora, Pearl Harbor and Other Acts of Infamy,” 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Kahala Nui, Kahala Senior Living Community, 89 Malia Street, Honolulu
