HONOLULU – The Department of Education and Kapi'olani Community College are pleased to present the 5th Annual Honolulu District Science and Engineering Fair on the grounds of Kapi'olani Community College on February 8. The event opens with an oli at 8:00am and closes with an awards ceremony at about 4:00pm.

This year, students from 23 elementary schools, 10 middle schools and 7 high schools will be competing for a berth in various categories to enter the Hawai'i State Science and Engineering Fair which is scheduled in April at the Hawai`i State Convention Center.

With its award-winning Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Program, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Louise Pagotto, thought Kapi'olani would be a natural fit and a perfect venue for this Fair. Leon Richards, Chancellor, said, “The synergy between the participants and volunteers is palpable. One walks away from this event feeling inspired by the imagination and ingenuity of the next generation.”

The science projects are phenomenal. A fifth grade entry is titled, “Capillary Action in Flowers,” and a twelfth grade entry explored, “Cellulosic Ethanol: Extracting Cellulose from Red Alien Seaweed, Gracillaria Salicornia”.

The Fair will also feature an art exhibit in Lama Library. The top winner’s art entry will be featured on the cover of next year’s Program and printed material.
