The University of Hawai‘i System is working with other higher education colleagues and the community to promote sustainability in higher education and our communities across the state.

Where: Windward Community College in Kaneohe

When:   March 13-15, 2014

Media tours of the Aquaponics Research Facility at WCC are available upon request.

Sustainability is critical in decision-making and planning for our state and our educational institutions. Over the past year, a Sustainability Strategy has been developed by student leaders, faculty, and staff at the University of Hawai‘i. This led to the January 2014 decision by the UH Board of Regents to amend the mission statement of the university to include a commitment to sustainability.

This marks an important milestone not only for the UH System and Higher Education in Hawai’i, but all of Hawai’i's communities.  It is in this spirit that we invite you to help us celebrate this success and share your ideas as we move from vision to action at the 2nd Annual Hawai‘i Sustainability in Higher Education Summit.

The three-day conference will engage participants in four tracks including Policy and Planning; Program Sharing (Curriculum, Operations, Green Workforce Development & Sustainable Businesses); Skill Building and Service Projects; and Student Leadership. Student members of the newly launched statewide Student Sustainability Coalition of Hawai‘i will organize a Student Forum to share experiences of their efforts in working toward more sustainable campuses and to organize cross-campus sustainability projects.

Registration for this event is open.  The deadline is March 10, 2014. Engage with other participants in one or more of the following sessions:

Thursday, March 13, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. for networking reception and poster session, sustainability in higher education awards ceremony, keynote and dinner

Friday, March 14, 8:00 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. for program sharing
Saturday, March 15, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for service projects and skill-building workshops
If you are a student, join us on Saturday, March 15, 12:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. for the Student Forum

Also:

Not-for-profit and community organizations are invited to share your exhibits for free during Thursday’s networking reception and dinner and/or Friday’s lunch.
Sponsorship opportunities starting at $500 are also available.

Guest speakers will include: Wendell Brase, Vice Chancellor, Administrative & Business Services, University of California, Irvine; Mitchell Thomashow, President Emeritus Unity College; Jacqueline Kozak-Thiel, Hawai‘i State Sustainability Coordinator; and UH President David Lassner.

Service Projects include: native plant or wetland restoration with ‘Ahahui Mālama
I Ka Lōkahi at Nā Pōhaku O Hauwahine; fishpond preservation at Waikalua Loko; and Waianu/Reppun's Farm tour. Skill-building workshops are offered for “Coastal Community Resilience” and “Ho’olaulima: Creating a culture of sustainability."
