Team Reaches Semifinals in National Agri-Marketing Competition

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo's National Agri-Marketing Association(NAMA) student marketing team reached the semifinals of the NAMA Marketingcompetition held April 11-13, 2001 in Denver, Colorado.

Thirty-five top universities across the nation participated in the competition,which is judged and critiqued by professional agri-marketers. In reachingthe semifinals, UH Hilo ranked among the top 12 universities in the nationand captured first place in its division by defeating Texas A&M, Universityof Minnesota, University of Tennessee and Ohio State University.

The team consisting of Diana Damon (horticulture), Jana Gonzales (agribusiness),Yvette Hall (agribusiness), Tyrus Hoshino (horticulture) and Athena Pratt(agribusiness) developed a comprehensive plan on marketing macadamia oil.

"This is the fourth time in the past nine years of competition thatwe have reached the semi-finals, including 1999 when we made it to the finalfour," said Dr. Sabry Shehata, UH Hilo NAMA advisor. "Our team'ssuccess has not only earned UH Hilo well deserved honors and recognition,but has gained nationwide exposure for the entire State of Hawaiʻi,"he added.

Students at UH Hilo learn marketing and communication skills while gainingexposure to the business community. These activities allow students toshowcase their talents and form networks with NAMA professionals to opendoors to future careers.
