HONOLULU – Everyday, a frail parent or someone we know is discharged from the hospital to return home with little or no in-home assistance. The number of families faced with this challenge grows every day. According to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Labor, the in-home caregiver vocation, which is also known as a personal care assistant or in-home assistant, is projected to be the second fastest growing occupation in the U.S. between now and 2020.

Kapi'olani Community College’s Kupuna Education Center is aware of this community need and is offering home caregiver training based on the nationally recognized Schmieding Method, and making a low-cost tuition loan available for the first time.

The training is flexible and is available to those who wish to make this work a career, or for anyone who needs more skills as a volunteer family caregiver.

Anyone who is interested in this training should attend a General Information Session at Kapi'olani Community College. This initial session will offer an orientation to the training, dates and time for the classes, and provide answers to all questions. Also available will be information about employment opportunities and information about a low-cost and easy to repay tuition loan which is being offered for the first time. The free General Information Sessions are as follows:

            Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 9:00AM – 11:00AM

            Tuesday, May 6, 2014 from 5:00PM – 7:00PM

Both sessions will be offered at Kapi'olani Community College, Kopiko Building, Room 242. The first class utilizing the Schmieding Method is scheduled for May 31.
