(Honolulu) - For the fourth year in a row, Honolulu Community College was selected as the Best Vocational School in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Hawaii’s Best People’s Choice Awards.  The tabloid was released in the Sunday, June 22 edition.

“Honolulu Community College is extremely grateful for this distinction.  It is with great pride and responsibility that we continue to provide the highest level of quality instruction through our diverse liberal arts and career and technical programs,” says Dr. Erika L. Lacro, Chancellor of Honolulu CC.

Honolulu Star-Advertiser readers were asked to write in their favorite in 144 categories.  Multiple-choice options were not provided.  Each ballot needed 25 categories filled to be deemed valid.  These votes were calculated electronically to determine who won – no duplications were allowed, one vote per person, which was also tracked electronically.  The Sunday edition of the Star-Advertiser has a readership of 391,000 households.

“Honolulu Community College has been educating our state’s work force for over 90 years.  What started as a trade school has evolved to become a comprehensive institution of higher learning for 50 years now offering 24 programs, 27 degrees and 39 certificate options,” shares Lacro.

Throughout the college’s long history it has gone through multiple name changes.  In 1920 the school opened its doors as the Territorial Trade School in Kapālama.  Later it was reestablished as Honolulu Vocational School.  Then in 1955, it was renamed Honolulu Technical School.  In 1964, the University of Hawai‘i Board of Regents approved the name Honolulu Community College, authorized to grant arts and associate in science degrees.

Today, with over 4,300 credit students and nearly 2,000 apprentice students, the main campus is a short distance from the heart of downtown Honolulu, occupying more than 20 acres on Dillingham Boulevard.  The college also has instructional facilities near Honolulu International Airport, heavy equipment shops on Kōkea Street, Kalaeloa Airport, and the Marine Education and Training Center at Sand Island.
