All in the Family opens on September 7, 2014. Opening reception is September 17 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. in the Honolulu Museum of Art School.

Sometimes a talent for art has some basis in genetics. Other times art is developed in close association with others. Frequently, art is All in the Family. That’s the title for an upcoming art exhibit put on by two artful families: the Hodges and the Rath-Mayfields.

The show comprises the work of Honolulu artist and Windward Community College Emeritus Professor of Art Snowden Hodges, along with his nephew, Addison Hodges and Addison’s wife, Cathy Yrizarry, of Baltimore, Maryland. In addition, Honolulu husband and wife Gerald W. Mayfield, M.D., and Paula Rath, will show their paintings.

The show will be held from September 7 – October 3, 2014, in the Mezzanine Gallery of The Honolulu Museum of Art School.

Snowden Hodges has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. His solo exhibitions have been held in Italy, San Francisco, Maryland and throughout Hawaii. In 2002 his solo exhibition at the Honolulu Museum of Art received critical acclaim both locally and nationally. He has also shown  in group shows in Japan, Florida, Maryland, and Delaware. He has works in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, The Honolulu Museum of Art, the Hawaii State Art Museum and the Pacific Club, to name a few. He is a Professor Emeritus of Art at UH and the founder of Atelier Hawaii, a program in classical realism at Windward Community College.

Addison Hodges received his BA from Maryland Institute of Art and his MFA from City University of New York.  He has held solo exhibitions in New York, Washington, DC, Virginia, Illinois and Maryland, as well as group exhibitions all across the United States. Actress Whoopie Goldberg is among his collectors. He has always been fascinated with the texture and sense of light in the paintings of Rembrandt and his homage can be seen in his painterly approach and the simple glow of lamplight fading to black.

Cathy Yrizarry was born in Queens, New York. She received her BA and MFA from the City University of New York. She has exhibited in New York, Indiana, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland and Virginia. She was deeply influenced by the work of artist Chuck Close, who she said uses the canvas as “a playground for abstraction while adhering to a photographic image of a portrait.” Her own photographs of goldfish became her subject matter and what began as portraits of individual fish have evolved into schools of fish appearing in the skies of romantic landscapes.

Gerald Mayfield, MD, is a retired orthopedic surgeon who began painting in earnest just before he retired in 2000. His watercolors, oils, sketch books and drawings have been exhibited at the Honolulu Museum of Art School, Gallery ‘Iolani at Windward Community College and the Louis Pohl Gallery.

Mayfield attended three six-week Ateliers with Snowden Hodges at Windward Community College, which he said furthered his understanding of composition, light value and color in painting.

Journalist Paula Rath began painting in 1999 when she took a watercolor workshop in Venice, Italy with renowned Honolulu teacher George Woollard. She has also studied with Darius Homay, Roger Whitlock, Alan Leitner and Timothy Ojile. She works mainly in acrylics, textiles and mixed media. Her paintings and mixed media works have been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout Honolulu, as well as a show in South Korea. She held a solo show in The Contemporary Museum Cafe in 2009.
