Eighteen outstanding UH faculty awarded Regents’ Medal for Excellence
University of HawaiʻiHONOLULU – Fifteen University of Hawai‘i faculty members have been selected as recipients of the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching, and three were selected as recipients of the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research.
University of Hawaii President David Lassner said, “University of Hawai‘i teachers and researchers are world-class, in subjects ranging from automotive technology and justice administration to marine biology and astronomy. We thank these outstanding teachers and researchers for their service and dedication. They truly make a difference in the lives of our students and in our community.”
The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching which recognizes faculty who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity, and personal values beneficial to students was awarded to:
- Ryan Daniels, Assistant Professor, Administration of Justice, University of Hawai‘i Maui College
- Alice Davis, Associate Professor, Nursing, University of Hawai‘i at Hilo
- Kenoalani Dela Cruz, Associate Professor and Counselor, Student Affairs-Counseling and Support Services Center, Hawai‘i Community College
- Richard Jones, Assistant Professor, Education, Elementary Education, University of Hawai‘i at West O‘ahu
- Helmut Kae, Assistant Professor, Biology, Leeward Community College
- Paul Lavy, Assistant Professor, Department of Art and Art History, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
- Hyoung-June Park, Associate Professor, School of Architecture, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
- Michael Paulding, instructor, Business, Legal and Technology Education Program, Kapi‘olani Community College
- Kavita Rao, Associate Professor, College of Educationʻs Department of Special Education, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
- Sandra Sanpei, Professor, Communication Arts, Honolulu Community College

The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research which recognizes a faculty member’s scholarly contributions that expand the boundaries of knowledge and enrich the lives of all in the community, nation and the world was awarded to:
- Ruth D. Gates, Associate Researcher, Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
- Andrew Howard, Assistant Astronomer, Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
- Nicholas Kaiser, Astronomer, Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
