This November and December, the University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu will host concerts by the UH West Oʻahu Band, University Chorus and performances by legendary musicians Jerry Santos and Henry Kapono. All concerts are free and open to the public.

UH West Oʻahu University Band Concert

Wednesday, Nov. 12, 7:30 p.m.

UH West Oʻahu Campus Center Multi-purpose Room, C208

The UH West Oʻahu University Band, directed by Chadwick Kamei, will perform works including Gioachino Rossini’s Barber of Seville, Leroy Anderson’s Christmas Festival, and Hollywood Film Composer Michael Giacchino’s Star Trek during the ensemble’s first on-campus concert, also featuring special guest Karen Keawehawaiʻi.

Interested in joining the band? The UH West Oʻahu Band welcomes high school and community musicians in addition to UH West Oʻahu students, faculty and staff. All interested participants should contact Pearl City High School Director of Bands Chadwick Kamei at ckamei@hawaii.edu to schedule an audition. Spring 2015 instruction begins Jan. 15, 2015.

UHWO Voice and Choral Instructor, baritone Jeremy Wong and collaborative pianist Petra Persolja will perform a showcase of music by Aaron Copland, William Bolcom, Richard Hundley, Marc Blitzstein, Tom Cipullo, and Mililani High School graduate Daniel Bayot.

Tuesday, Nov. 25, 12:30-3:30 p.m.

UH West Oʻahu Dining Hall

Eat lunch and enjoy music by slack key artist and songwriter, Jerry Santos, joined by UHWO ʻukulele, slack key guitar and Hawaiian Ensemble students from 12:30-2:15 p.m. Santos will discuss music creation with UHWO Music faculty members Kamuela Kimokeo and Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Jon Magnussen during a Songwriter Talk Story Session following the performance from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Eat lunch and enjoy music by one of Hawaiʻiʻs premiere singer-songwriters, Henry Kapono, as he shares some of his own favorites and is joined by UHWO students performing their brand new original songs written for the MUS 208 Introduction to Songwriting class. Kapono will discuss music creation with UHWO’s Dr. Jon Magnussen during a Songwriter Talk Story Session following the performance from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

University Chorus Concert

Friday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m.

UH West Oʻahu Campus Center Multi-purpose Room, C208

Members of the UH West Oʻahu University Chorus will perform holiday music, directed by Choral Instructor Jeremy Wong, with special guests from Mililani High School’s Chamber Singers and Kapolei High School’s Hurricane Singers.

The University Chorus welcomes community musicians in addition to UH West Oʻahu students, faculty and staff. The ability to read music is not required. Songwriting Hōʻike

Come hear these inspiring original songs and the stories behind them by students from this fall’s MUS 208 Introduction to Songwriting class taught by UHWO Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Jon Magnussen. During the course, students write and record original songs in UH West Oʻahu’s on-campus recording studio.
