The University of Hawai‘i – West O‘ahu recently signed an agreement with Tokai University establishing an academic partnership between the two universities. The agreement builds on the partnership between UH West O‘ahu and Hawaii Tokai International College (HTIC), which is the first of its kind in the nation between a public university and a U.S. accredited international junior college with physical campuses next to each other. HTIC is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and is the only Japan-affiliated liberal arts college accredited by the U.S. accrediting body.

The partnership pledges UH West Oʻahu and HTIC will

  • Participate in the joint delivery of courses and programs
  • Share academic resources
  • Participate in collaborative research and publication
  • Participate in the joint organization of special technical and administrative programs
  • Provide UH West Oʻahu and HTIC students opportunities to take credit courses at the other campus

“This agreement with Hawaii Tokai International College provides new international learning opportunities for UH West Oʻahu students including language instruction and study abroad programs in Japan, Korea and China. Tokai students will benefit from UH West Oʻahu as an indigenous-serving, public university in Hawaiʻi dedicated to Native Hawaiian values and ways of learning,” said UH West Oʻahu Chancellor, Rockne Freitas. “We are looking forward to this exciting partnership that will enrich the university experience for all of the students, faculty, and staff at both institutions.”

“Hawaii Tokai International College’s students are excited about the opportunity to interact with UH West Oʻahu’s diverse student body when our new campus opens this spring,” said HTIC Interim Chancellor Dr. Edward Shultz. “Our partnership with UH West Oʻahu will strengthen the ability of both of our institutions to offer students a truly global education.”

Hawaii Tokai International College is currently located in Honolulu and will move to its newly constructed Kapolei campus adjacent to UH West Oʻahu in April 2015.

Established in 1976, the University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu offers quality education, small classes and personalized attention with academic programs that emphasize the exploration of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural studies.
