HONOLULU – Kapi'olani Community College’s Health Sciences departments successfully pair academic achievement with leadership. Each Spring, members of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) hone their subject knowledge and skills to compete and qualify for the State and National Conferences. HOSA is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education (HSTE) Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE).

This February, an impressive gathering of 1,300 members representing 22 high schools and eight post-secondary institutions participated in the 10th Annual HOSA Leadership Conference. Kapi'olani CC had a total of 33 participants in 10 events, ending with 15 medallion winners. The results are phenomenal:

Medical Spelling – Jason Ballesteros, 1st place; Hanna Siew, 2nd place
Medical Terminology – Joy Ramiro, 2rd place
Medical Math – Mary Leivi Piso, 1st place; Brandon Gines, 2nd place;
Knowledge Exams: Human Growth and Development – Samantha Swarens, 1st place; Alayna Cantillo, 2nd place
Knowledge Exams: Pathophysiology – John Ventura, 3rd place
Clinical Specialty – Ashley Rapoza, 1st place
Medical Assisting – Eva Costa, 1st place; Latanya Edwards, 2nd place; Michelle Barroga, 3rd place
Job Seeking Skills – Abi Roxas, 1st place; Tiffany Arapari, 2nd place
Prepared Speaking – Nicholas J. Dela Rosa-Tabilisma, 3rd place

Since participating in the competition, this is the sixth time in eight years that Kapi'olani CC swept the top awards for Medical Assisting.

All 15 medallion winners are eligible to compete at the National Leadership Conference from June 24 – 27, 2015, in Anaheim, CA.
