International war crimes judicial expert to lecture Oct. 14 at UH Law School

Judge Alphons M.M. Orie

A distinguished international judge, renowned for his expertise about war crimes, will give a free public lecture at the Law School on the UH Mānoa campus on Wednesday, October 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of the Distinguished Jurist Lecture Series.

For the past 14 years, Judge Alphons M.M. Orie from the Netherlands has presided over some of the most important trials of generals and political leaders at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

His lecture in CR2 at the William S. Richardson School of Law will cover the challenges of prosecuting war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity.

The lecture series is sponsored by three entities: the ASEAN Law & Integration Center (ALIC), the William S. Richardson School of Law and the Spark M. Matsunaga Institute for Peace & Conflict Resolution in the College of Social Sciences.

The title of Judge Orie’s lecture is “Prosecuting Complex International Crimes at the ICTY: How to Cope with Complexity Through the Law of Procedure, Substantive Law, and Trial Management.”

Judge Orie was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands in 1997 and took office as a Judge of the ICTY in 2001. He earned his master's degree in law from Leyden University in the Netherlands.  He lectured at the university and practiced law, with a specialty in international criminal cases, extradition, transfer of prisoners and international judicial cooperation. He is scheduled to give the annual Kooijmans Lecture and to receive an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Amsterdam later this month.

Professor David Cohen will moderate the lecture and Law Dean Avi Soifer will offer opening remarks.
