Kapiʻolani Community College is currently looking for community college students with little or no prior knowledge of the Japanese language to participate in a unique scholarship program that will involve intensive study of the Japanese language and one semester of study abroad in Japan. Applications are currently being accepted for the Freeman Foundation Community College Scholarship Program. Deadline to apply is Friday, April 30.

Participants will be involved in intensive Japanese language study for the Fall 2004 semester at Kapiʻolani CC followed by a semester abroad at Nanzan University in Japan for the Spring 2005 semester. The scholarship pays for tuition, room and board at Kapiʻolani CC, and airfare, tuition, room, board and a stipend for the semester study period in Japan.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must be U.S. citizens, have a minimum GPA of 3.3, and be full-time (12 credits or more) community college students at any of the UH community college campuses — Hawaiʻi, Honolulu, Kapiʻolani, Kauai, Leeward, Maui, or Windward. Students cannot have taken any Japanese language courses beyond the level 102 course.

Kapiʻolani CC received a two-year $1.2 million grant from the Freeman Foundation to establish this intensive second language learning and study abroad program for full-time students attending the seven community colleges within the UH system.
